Our Story
We are the mighty fighting Vikings
Wynnum Vikings AFC is an Australian Rules Football Club situated in the Wynnum-Manly District, east of Brisbane City. The club maintains a focus on family and community, actively engaging in local activities and events. Established in 1966, the club's history can be traced back to 1905 when the game was first documented in the district. The club prides itself on its "blue collar" heritage.
Mission
The mission of the club is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for players and members to learn and engage in AFL, fostering family involvement and offering opportunities for socialization. The club strives to be welcoming to all visitors, including supporters, umpires, volunteers, players, and their families.
Future Prospects
Despite being in a rebuilding phase during 2023 and 2024, the club remains optimistic about its future. There is an increasing number of participants in various football programs, including Superstars, Juniors, Youths, Girls and Women, and Masters teams. An annual Auskick program is also conducted. Youth teams demonstrated strong performances in 2023 and 2024, with both boys' and girls' teams reaching finals. The club is enhancing its facilities, having completed improved drainage on the main oval in 2024 and planning renovations to the clubhouse and home change rooms to be completed by 2025.
The club is committed to supporting player wellbeing and the broader community through events that raise awareness and funds for women's health, domestic violence services, and mental health initiatives.
Wynnum Vikings AFC has a successful competitive history. The Seniors team won premierships in 1974, 2003, 2008, and 2009, with additional runner-up positions in other years. The Reserves team secured a premiership in 1998 and were runners-up in 2019, while youth teams have also achieved notable success.
Despite challenges, the future appears promising with rising participation rates. Historical records reveal that the club originally played in blue, red, and white colours as the 'Tricolours,' winning premierships in 1909 and 1920. Over time, the colours evolved to dark blue/light blue with some yellow elements, with the current combination established since 2012.
Club History
Early documentation shows that games commenced in 1905. Known initially as the 'Tricolours', Wynnum competed in blue, red, and white colours. The club won premierships in 1909 and 1920 but did not participate in the 1912, 1922, and 1924 seasons. The club was formally established in 1966. The adoption of dark blue/light blue colours is undated, but yellow was subsequently incorporated into the uniform. Jerseys with a noticeable yellow element were worn for several years, culminating in a predominantly yellow youth jersey in 2011. The current dark and light blue combination has been in use since 2012.
